A tip, have some project without a real goal. See what happened in your mind “in the processes of working with the project”, and follow your thought . A weak idea is a starting point if you don't have better ideas. Start working and new better ideas will come. The start of the frog was a scribble in Inkscape of a flying brass robot. And when I did the body I saw it as a frog body in my head. And I improvised from there.
How long you think you needed for this picture... I think it will go easy to some hundred hours. Also I would be interested how many different objects gradients and so on are in the picture
Inkscape is available for all OS.
I like your nic too. I've had that Zappa album (Apostrophe) on my 'puter for the last few months and have been listening to it. Don't eat that yellow snow!
